چکیده

The increasing illumination of our world by artificial light at night (ALAN) has created a new field global change research with impacts now being demonstrated across taxa, biological ranks and spatial scales. Following advances in terrestrial ecology, marine ALAN become rapidly growing area attracting scientists from all biomes. Technological limitations, complexities researching many coastal ecosystems the interdisciplinary nature present numerous challenges. Drawing on expertise optical oceanographers, modellers, community ecologists, experimental molecular biologists, we share practical advice solutions that have proven useful for research. Discussing lessons learnt early can help effective efficient development field. guide follows sensory ecology approach to pollution consolidates physics, biology. First, introduce lightscapes highlighting how these differ ones provide an overview adaptations them. Second, discuss study design technology best quantify exposure organisms including tools approaches scale-up We conclude presents opportunities not only improving understanding this globally widespread stressor, but also advancing fundamental photobiology, chronobiology night-time ecology. Interdisciplinary will be essential gain insights into natural shaping evolution ecosystems.

Artificial Light at Night and Cancer: Global Study

Background: Artificial light at night (ALAN) has been linked to increased risk of cancers in body sites like the breast and colorectum. However exposure of ALAN as an environmental risk factor and its relation to cancers in humans has never been studied in detail. Objective: To explore the association of ALAN with all forms of cancers in 158 countries. Materials and Methods: An ecological study...

Artificial light at night advances avian reproductive physiology.

Artificial light at night is a rapidly increasing phenomenon and it is presumed to have global implications. Light at night has been associated with health problems in humans as a consequence of altered biological rhythms. Effects on wild animals have been less investigated, but light at night has often been assumed to affect seasonal cycles of urban dwellers. Using light loggers attached to fr...

Artificial light at night causes an unexpected increase in oxalate in developing male songbirds

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is a widespread and increasing environmental pollutant with known negative impacts on animal physiology and development. Physiological effects could occur through sleep disruption and deprivation, but this is difficult to quantify, especially in small developing birds. Sleep loss can potentially be quantified by using oxalate, a biomarker for sleep debt in adult...

Light-at-night, cancer and aging

concluded that "shift-work that involves circadian disruption is probably carcinogenic to humans" [1]. This conclusion was based upon limited evidence in humans [2, 3] and sufficient evidence in experimental animals [4, 5]. The current experimental results of Vinogradova and colleagues from Petrozavodsk and St. Petersburg render further support to this important issue and indicate a number of h...

Microbial diversity and community respiration in freshwater sediments influenced by artificial light at night.

An increasing proportion of the Earth's surface is illuminated at night. In aquatic ecosystems, artificial light at night (ALAN) may influence microbial communities living in the sediments. These communities are highly diverse and play an important role in the global carbon cycle. We combined field and laboratory experiments using sediments from an agricultural drainage system to examine how AL...
